Are you getting itchy feet in your current job? With the New Year fast approaching, it’s not uncommon to start thinking about new opportunities and exploring what’s out there. But do you know what industries you should be looking at?

New data from CV-Library has explored the sectors that have seen the biggest growth in jobs so far this year, ultimately making them some of the best industries to consider working in right now. So read on for our insights and get a head start on the New Year recruitment rush.

1. Legal

According to our data, there was a 26.6% increase in the number of legal vacancies advertised between January and October this year. What’s more, average salaries for new legal roles jumped by 8.8% compared to the same period last year.

Adding to this, The Law Society has reported that industry turnover will see a 2.3% increase in 2019, meaning you can continue to expect promising pay packages and career development prospects.

Plus, working in the legal industry doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be a lawyer. Many firms require people to help with their HR, marketing and admin efforts, so there’s a whole host of opportunities available.

2. Retail

While the retail sector has continued to battle through ongoing uncertainty this year, our data shows that advertised retail jobs jumped by 22.5% in 2018. Online shopping brands, in particular, are thriving, with ASOS seeing group revenues increase by 22% in the four months to June 2018.

So, considering working for an online brand could be a smart idea. Especially as many are transforming the shopping experience, from introducing handy sizing tools to generous returns policies. That means you could be working somewhere that’s innovative and ahead of the game.

3. Hospitality

With reports that the UK hospitality sector could be worth £100 billion by the end of 2018, now could be a great time to join this thriving sector. Particularly as our own data found that advertised jobs grew by 19.1% this year.

This is largely down to increased demand from consumers and is positive news for those who want to work in an industry that caters for flexibility.

4. IT

Another fast growing sector in the UK is IT, which saw advertised tech jobs jump 19.1% between January and October. What’s more, average advertised salaries grew by 4.8% this year, meaning working in this sector is a smart move if you want a pay rise.

In other positive news, according to the 2018 Tech Nation Report, the UK tech sector is growing over two times faster than the economy as a whole. What’s more, London has been named as the second most connected place for tech in the world, only coming second to Silicon Valley in the US.

Key technologies that are shaping the industry right now include artificial intelligence (AI), data science and cybersecurity, so it’s a great time to learn key skills in these areas.
